Daviess County Public Schools Seeks Community Input for 'Portrait of a Learner' Initiative

Daviess County Public Schools (DCPS) is embarking on an exciting initiative to define the essential skills, knowledge, and attributes that students need to succeed in school and beyond. Through the "Portrait of a Learner" initiative, DCPS aims to create a shared vision that will guide curriculum development, classroom instruction, and community engagement.

What is the Portrait of a Learner?

A Portrait of a Learner is a set of aspirations that outlines what every student should know and be able to do in an evolving world shaped by technology, human interaction, and innovation. Rather than focusing solely on traditional academic achievements, this initiative emphasizes real-world competencies such as problem-solving, communication, collaboration, and resilience.

According to Superintendent Charles Broughton, the Portrait of a Learner will serve as a framework for designing instruction that equips students with the skills necessary for success in college, careers, and life. "This initiative provides school leaders and teachers with a roadmap to develop engaging, real-world learning experiences that prepare students for the future," Broughton stated.

Community Collaboration in Shaping Education

DCPS recognizes the importance of community involvement in shaping the future of education. To ensure the initiative reflects the values and aspirations of Daviess County, the district has formed a committee comprising parents, students, teachers, business leaders, and community members. These stakeholders are working together to identify and define the key characteristics students should develop.

The working group has already highlighted several essential traits, including:

  • Citizenship – Understanding civic responsibilities and contributing positively to society.

  • Communication – Expressing ideas clearly, adjusting communication for different audiences, and active listening.

  • Collaboration – Working effectively with others to achieve common goals.

  • Problem-Solving – Applying critical thinking to overcome challenges.

  • Character – Demonstrating integrity, responsibility, and ethical behavior.

  • Resilience – Adapting to challenges with perseverance and a growth mindset.

These characteristics will be integrated into classroom instruction, ensuring that all decisions made in the educational setting align with the Portrait of a Learner framework.

How the Community Can Get Involved

To gather broader input, DCPS is hosting a series of community stakeholder meetings. The first of these meetings took place in late January, allowing participants to share their thoughts on what skills and values should be emphasized in student education. Additional meetings will follow, providing further opportunities for discussion and collaboration.

Furthermore, DCPS is conducting a public survey through February 10 to ensure all residents, including those without direct ties to the school system, have a chance to voice their opinions. This survey aims to capture the diverse perspectives of the community, helping to shape a well-rounded and representative Portrait of a Learner.

A Lasting Impact on Education

Once finalized, the Portrait of a Learner will serve as a foundational document for DCPS, influencing curriculum design, instructional strategies, and community partnerships. Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning, Jana Beth Francis, emphasized the long-term benefits of the initiative: "By engaging with our stakeholders, we can create a roadmap that truly reflects what Daviess County envisions for its students. This will support educators in planning more meaningful and engaging learning experiences."

Superintendent Broughton envisions the initiative becoming a defining aspect of the school district’s culture. "We want this to be more than just a document—we want it to be a way of life for Daviess County Public Schools," he said.

Looking Ahead

With the goal of implementing the Portrait of a Learner for the 2025-26 school year, DCPS is committed to ensuring that its students are equipped with the skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. By fostering strong connections between schools, families, businesses, and the broader community, the initiative promises to have a lasting impact on education in Daviess County.

As the initiative progresses, the district encourages all community members to participate in discussions, attend meetings, and provide input through the ongoing survey. Together, the community can shape a future where every learner reaches their full potential.
