Jackson Township Delays Vote on Goetz Middle School Closure

The fate of Carl W. Goetz Middle School in Jackson Township remains uncertain after school officials postponed a key vote originally scheduled for Wednesday night. The decision on whether to close the middle school and convert Jackson Memorial High School into a middle school has now been rescheduled for February 19.

Budget Cuts and Enrollment Decline

The Jackson Township school district has been struggling with financial constraints following a substantial loss of state aid. Over the past seven years, the district has experienced a $22.4 million reduction in funding, forcing difficult decisions about school closures and redistricting. Superintendent Nicole Pormilli emphasized that enrollment has declined by more than 15%, making it increasingly difficult to maintain all current facilities.

Proposed Redistricting Plan

If the plan moves forward, Jackson Memorial High School will be repurposed as the district’s sole middle school, while Jackson Liberty High School will become the only high school for students in grades 9 through 12. This restructuring follows the closure of Sylvia Rosenauer Elementary School last year, which was sold for $13.1 million in December.

Community Reactions

The proposed changes have sparked mixed reactions from students, parents, and community members. High school student Chloe Torres expressed frustration over the delayed vote, stating, "I think they should make the decision today like they were supposed to, but I guess we'll have to wait and see." Others, like grandparent Angel Jusino, pointed out that Jackson Liberty High School was originally designed with expansion in mind and could accommodate more students.

Future of Goetz Middle School

While the district has not announced plans to sell the Goetz Middle School property, officials are considering renting it out instead. The uncertainty surrounding the school’s future has left many in the community eager for answers at the upcoming school board meeting.

Looking Ahead

The final vote is now set for February 19. Until then, Jackson Township residents and stakeholders will be watching closely as the district navigates these significant financial and structural changes.

Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
